Oregon Buttes, in western Wyoming, are the landmark that signified to Oregon Trail immigrants, the crossing of the Continental Divide at South Pass. The area is occupied by pronghorn and wild horses.

In this painting, the rhythm of the buttes is repeated in the running pronghorn and shapes of the sagebrush.
